THE GRAND SALON

As you step into Purnon’s Grand Salon, you can perhaps imagine the grand receptions that would have been hosted here.

The decorative style changed at the end of the 19th century. The fireplace is in a rococo style and the cast iron fire back carries the coats of arms of the Rochequairie Family and the Le Lau family. It was brought to Purnon by the Marquis Daniel de Rochequairie at the end of the 19th century from Château de la Motte-Glain.

The architectural drawings displayed in the Grand Salon are the original first draft of the château plans. They were discovered in Purnon’s attic and we donated them to the departmental archives for restoration and safe keeping.

If we look carefully we can see many changes in the final design of Château de Purnon. For example many circular windows were originally planned. Only four of these oculi (round windows) were actually built.

One of the drawings contains the signature of Laurent Bourgeois, the architect who designed Purnon for the Marquis Antoine-Charles Achard de la Haye.
