THE LAUNDRY
This room was a laundry. The large limestone vats are called ‘ponnes’ in the local dialect.
Blankets and other large items would have been washed and soaked in these vats using a mix of hot water and potash extracted from the large fireplaces. The process took three days. The water was drained away using taps that sat at the base of the vats. Typically these large items were only washed a couple of times each year.
